Several years ago, the Baix Empordà region decided to pursue active tourism as a model for sustainable tourism development that can use natural resources and can make tourism demand less seasonal. This model inspired the creation of a hiking network (370 km), a cycle touring network (310 km) and a mountain biking centre with different routes around the region (180 km). In total there are almost 1000 signed kilometres in the region, many of which pass through protected natural spaces.

This active-tourism is now a major attraction for visitors and tourists and has helped revitalise much of the region, especially the smaller villages. In addition, the growing awareness of and respect for natural spaces makes these activities all the more valuable.

The Regional Council is responsible for managing these networks, including maintenance, publicity and promotion.
