Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit, in the very middle of the region, with 11,645 inhabitants, comprises two centres of population.
At the feet of the Montgrí limestone mountains is Torroella de Montgrí, a royal town surrounded by fields and gardens watered by the final stretch of the Ter. A journey through Torroella is a journey through time. The remains of the walled Torroella, the gate of Santa Caterina (C. 11-13), the tower of les Bruixes (C. 15-16); the Gothic church of Sant Genís (C. 16-19) and Montgrí castle (C. 13), which are two jewels of the municipality; the Casa Pastors from the 16-17 centuries, the Casa del Metge on Carrer Major, and to finish with a last special touch, the colonial houses built by emigrants to the Americas who returned having made their fortune, and which now also form part of this architectural archive.
The Museum of the Mediterranean and the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park Interpretation Centre are also worth noting. The Museum of the Mediterranean enables visitors to discover and get to know the Mediterranean starting from the Montgrí mountains, the Baix Ter plain and the Medes Islands.
By the sea, l’Estartit is one of the best tourist centres on the Costa Brava, with the Medes Islands and the Mediterranean providing the backdrop to an incomparable scene. Strolling through the narrow streets or the busy Carrer de Santa Anna, you can sense the rhythm of life of the old days, maritime traditions, the life of the taverns and the processions in the festivals that still take place today.
The municipality is part of the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park (68% of the total area, of which 23% is sea and 77% land). Created in 2010, the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park offers the chance to discover unique landscapes of great beauty and natural diversity that have been shaped by human activity. We invite you to get to know them.
With its diversity of landscape, services and facilities, the municipality offers a wide variety of tourist proposals for stays and activities. These suggestions will let you discover nature and the sea, experience adventures, learn, savour the landscape and participate in festivals, traditions and cultural activities. The different experiences we present are aimed at everyone and have been classified taking into account the profile of the public and the different types of activity.
