Gavarres mountains

  • Les Gavarres. Muntanya verda

The Gavarres mountains include land in the Baix Empordà and Gironès regions. Twenty municipalities make up this space which is recognised and protected for its natural and cultural value.
In 1992 it was declared a Protected Natural Space as part of Catalonia’s Plan for Spaces of Natural Interest because the most important cork oak and maritime pine woodland in Catalonia is found here . The predominant landscape is heath and cistus undergrowth, with a tree stratum of holm oaks, cork oaks and pines, and with large numbers of strawberry trees.

In addition, in 2011 ten heritage elements in the Gavarres were declared to be Areas of Ethnological Interest as they represent all of the cultural ethnologic heritage found in this massif. At the time, this was the first natural space to be recognised with this cultural declaration anywhere in Catalonia. It is worth adding that an important concentration of archaeological elements has been recorded in the Gavarres, most notably the megalithic monuments.

Finally, if you come to explore the Gavarres, make sure you do not leave without visiting some of the old parish churches that used to be the backbone of the population of the massif and were the centre of local and religious relations. These routes in the Gavarres are within reach of everyone as the mountains have a gentle topography with the highest peak, Puig de la Gavarra, being 532 metres in height.
