24 hours in Begur

Begur in a day; discover everything it has to offer, wandering through the old town until you reach the sea. #begurisauthentic #visitbegur
Located in the heart of the Empordà with almost 4,000 inhabitants, the town of Begur and its beaches are one of the most marvellous places in the Costa Brava. The municipality comprises a group of hills called the Begur massif, and an extensive coastline, bathed by the Mediterranean sea.
It is also very well known for its coastal paths, which enable you to discover all of the corners that are hidden by its rocks and cliffs.
And don’t forget that if you spend a day here, you must try the local produce, rockfish dishes that will make your mouth water just thinking of them.
Why not try it?

A visit of the historical legacy

The day starts at 10:00 with a walk around the centre of the town, with the map and historical itinerary that will guide you around all of the points of interest that you should not miss.

The old part of Begur contains many monuments that have remained as the legacy of the most significant moments in its history, leaving a centre that will not fail to move you.

With a profound historical personality, you will find that sheltering under the medieval castle, coral collectors, fishermen, indianos (people who made their fortune in the Americas) and people who worked with cork have protagonised brilliant pages in a history that is reflected in every street, house and corner of the town.

(You should allow an hour and a half to visit the old town.)

    A walk by the sea

To carry on exploring, you can continue the day at approximately 11.30 with a little active tourism. Drive to whichever of the three beach areas you want, and remember that these walks are suitable for everyone. Don’t worry, if you find yourself wanting to go further; you can do all three! Allow an hour for the north or east coastal paths and two hours for the south one (allow a little longer if you go for a swim).

For more ambitious people, there is the option of doing a local path or the GR-92 and going down to one of the beaches. Once there. You can come back on the beaches bus (summer service) or return on foot (allow two or three hours for this option).

A good moment to taste local produce

When you reach this point it will be about 13:00 and you will probably be feeling hungry. This is the best time to choose somewhere for lunch, either overlooking the sea or going back to the centre of the town. The range of bars and restaurants is enormous and so you might find choosing tricky!

If you come in May, you will find there is a gastronomic campaign, and so you can enjoy some of the rockfish menus on offer in the participating restaurants. This is a good moment to try the local produce.

The Begur coast, the best example of the Costa Brava

To continue the day and help digest your lunch, you can take advantage and do another coastal path, as it will now be around 16:00 and there will be time to enjoy another one.

In the summer season (from mid-June to mid-September) you can avoid using the car by taking the beach bus service.

You should not forget that the coast of Begur is of unparalleled beauty, with the cliffs, pines, hidden coves with crystal clear waters and the rugged coastline making this area the best example of the Costa Brava. Begur has eight coves and beaches situated to the north, east and south of the town with very varied characteristics and beauty.

    Unbeatable sunsets

To finish off getting to know the town, you can climb up to the castle or go to a viewpoint to enjoy the best sunsets Begur has to offer. If you still want to continue the day, head back into the centre of the town for some tapas and a drink.

Summer suggestion: coastal excursion by boat or kayak

In the summer season, we recommend discovering Begur’s coast from the sea, in a kayak or a boat. This is the best way to discover the coast as there are many corners that can only be reached from the sea.
