The festes majors are the celebrations that best embody the essence of the land and of each particular village, town or city. These events bring together neighbours and visitors to celebrate each place’s patron saint.
Over time, the festes majors have become consolidated around vital elements, such as religious services, sardanes, dances and concerts, parades of giants and capgrossos and bestiari (figures of real and imaginary beasts and people with outsize heads), human towers, communal meals and correfocs where people dress up as devils and set off fireworks, which can be found in most of Catalonia’s festes majors. In addition, each municipality has distinctive activities, that make their festa major a unique celebration and experience that is ideal for discovering the spirit of towns and cities.
