One of the most distinctive attractions of the Baix Empordà is a visit to the rice fields of Pals. Located in the natural park, the backdrop of the Montgrí offers a very special scenic composition and one which is deeply rooted in the region. Furthermore, the cycle of the rice itself transforms this landscape, with periods when the fields are drained (winter) and periods when they are flooded (spring). This cycle also coincides with the sowing and subsequent harvest.
One good way to enjoy this space is by bicycle, and the beach of Pals is a good starting point, specifically the reception space near the well-known “Basses d’en Coll”. The cycle touring network enables you to do an outing through fields and crops, arriving at the river’s mouth or Platja de la Fonollera. The PR-108 also dives into this highly distinctive part of the region.
