Experiences and traditions

Heritage thrives all over the Baix Empordà in a multitude of places, buildings and manifestations that help us understand not just the past, but also the present.
Thanks to the efforts of the towns and villages and the involvement of their people, many signs of this heritage have become experiences in the form of events that transmit the heartbeat of the Baix Empordà to everyone who experiences them.

    Relive our past

The history of the Baix Empordà is explained by the imprints left over millennia by the civilisations that have settled in this corner of the Mediterranean. We can now understand and enjoy the culture of the Iberians (Iberian Festival of Ullastret), life in medieval times (the medieval markets of Calonge, Castell d’Aro and Peratallada), the threat of pirates (the Pirates and Corsairs Festival in l’Estartit) and the adventures of the indianos, the people who set sail for the Americas to find their fortune (the Indianos Festival in Begur). You should also not miss the chance to attend other events with deep roots in the region, such as the Flag of Catalonia in Bellcaire d’Empordà or the Verges Procession.

    Learn our crafts

Traditional crafts are a reflection of how people have adapted to the diverse and fertile territory of the Baix Empordà. Whether linked to the land (the Sowing and Threshing Festival in Pals, traditional Rice Sowing and Harvest in Pals, the New Wine Festival in Calonge and the Festival of Sant Andreu in Torroella de Montgrí), the sea (Land of the Sea Festival), the woods (the Carbonera de Forallac Charcoal Making Festival and the Llofriu Cork Harvesting Festival), or even if they derive from the creative spirit of the workshops (tile firing in Can Frigola and pot turning demonstration in la Bisbal), these crafts are preserved today and combine technical innovations with expertise inherited from the past

    Listen to our music

Musical heritage is one of the foundations of the culture of the Baix Empordà. Popular and tavern songs feature talent and charisma that has been passed down to current musicians, whatever their style. Therefore, you should not miss enjoying one of the many performances of habaneras held in the region, such as the performance of habaneras in Calella de Palafrugell. As well as the songs and performers, the musical panorama also features the many performances that, year after year, make the most emblematic settings in the region vibrate with a wide range of styles, such as the Festival of Torroella de Montgrí or the Porta Ferrada Festival in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, among many other musical performances.

    Participate in our traditions

The traditions of the Baix Empordà are refreshed and relived in a variety of celebrations with both religious and secular origins, which have been preserved thanks to the collaboration of the inhabitants of the towns and villages who bring them to life and open them up to participation by visitors. Some examples of these traditions can be found in the living nativity scenes of Castell d’Aro, Calonge and Pals, the carnivals celebrated around the Baix Empordà and the spring festivals of Palafrugell.
