The Empordà

  • What is the Empordà?

The name evokes a wide variety of images and ideas. This region has always been a crossroads and its many contrasts are its distinguishing feature: the calm of the inland area and the summer bustle of the coast, the open beaches and sheltered coves, the mountains and plains, the farm work and the industry in the cities, traditional cuisine and innovative gastronomy, Dalí’s inspiration and Josep Pla’s good sense… There is not just one Empordà; there are many. The balanced combination of everything is what makes this land and its inhabitants special. All visitors will find that this is a place that makes them feel a connection with the history, landscape and people of a limitless region.

  • Framed between the Montgrí mountains and the Cadiretes–L’Ardenya mountains, the Baix Empordà extends in a mosaic of fields, hills, woodland and waterways that opens out onto the Mediterranean. Its scenic variety and gentle climate –with the exception of the tramuntana and other less powerful winds – have made it an ideal area for human settlement where everything is in easy reach. Since prehistoric times, people here have established a close connection with nature, expressed through their crafts, from farmers to artists and from fishermen to potters. As you follow country roads from village to village, while enjoying the Costa Brava’s rugged terrain and savouring the fruits of the land and the sea, you will find that the Baix Empordà is a living region with a heritage that evolves through the joint efforts of an enterprising and creative community, a region with character and personality that is also very welcoming and generous to everyone who shares this love for this corner of our country.
