Like its neighbouring villages, Albons was founded on top of a small hill, as protection essentially against the periodical floods suffered by the plain due to the presence of numerous watercourses, including one of the main arms of the River Ter.
However, the presence of the remains of the Albons castle also show us that the hilltop position had its defensive importance. The open space of the main square must have contained other constructions of the fortress. To the west of the square stands the only remaining vestige of the walls, the lower part of a quadrangular tower. The medieval structure of Albons means that the streets climb up to the upper part, which is occupied by the parish church of Sant Cugat, documented from the second half of the 13th C. The church is of Romanesque origin, and still conserves a baptismal font carved out of a single block of limestone.
Still within the municipal district, we must mention the chapel of Sant Grau, now restored, situated in the Valldavià hills, which are covered by a dense forest of Aleppo pine – some points, however, do offer quite broad views of the Empordanese plain. Close to the chapel is the Merla fountain.
