Torroella de Montgrí-L'Estartit
Torroella de Montgrí

The municipality, with over 11.494 inhabitants, has two main centres of population, namely Torroella, inland, and L’Estartit, on the coast.

The town of Torroella has an early medieval nucleus, with a maze of narrow streets around the church of Sant Genís and the palace known as Palau Reial del Mirador. Of the walls that once surrounded the town, the Torre de les Bruixes, the Santa Caterina Gate and a part of the wall are still conserved. The other focal point is the porticoed Plaça Major or Main Square, the focal point of the rest of the streets, more ordered. Among the old mansions we can single out the Palau Solterra and the Casa Pastor, now the home of the Mediterranean Museum - Can Quintana.

Torroella has an important musical tradition, particularly related to the sardana dance. In summer it holds the famous Torroella de Montgrí International Music Festival, which attracts leading figures from all over the world.

At the top of the massif of the Montgrí rises the emblematic form of the Montgrí Castle, which has remained unfinished since 1301. The view of the Empordà from the hilltop is breathtaking. Apart from its natural beauty, the massif has a rich historical and cultural heritage, including the lonely chapel of Santa Caterina.

The Montgrí overlooks the sea, and at its foot lies the small town of L’Estartit. Between Torroella and L’Estartit there are numerous fortified farmhouses with splendid watchtowers.

L’Estartit, with the mountain behind it and the sea in front, was a fishermen’s neighbourhood until the 19th C., but it has now developed extensive tourist services in the form of various types of accommodation, bars and an attractive pedestrian shopping area. Just offshore lie the Medes Islands, a protected spot of extraordinary beauty, particularly for lovers of water sports, and a paradise for divers. L’Estartit, now a Nautical Station forming part of the Spanish network of such centres, also has a very active marina and sailing club.
