The Roaring of Pals Lagoon
arrossals de Pals

Near what is known as Pals lagoon is a small mountain covered with trees, brambles and scrub. The denseness of the vegetation makes this spot almost inaccessible for man, as the brushwood forms a barrier that is difficult to get past.
Few are the townspeople who come up here, except perhaps for the odd hunter who, on the trail of his prey, finds he has to go in, always in haste and prey to a certain ill-ease.
The people of Pals tell that some nights in this place there can be heard a roaring what makes even the most steely-nerved person’s hair stand on end. Some think it could be the roar of a dragon or perhaps of the spirit of the rice cultivators who died of drowning in the marshes... or maybe again the roar of some prehistoric animal that might have survived down to our day; some even claim to have seen its threatening shadow fall just before they heard the roar.
Other more realistic or perhaps more fearful people say that the roar is made by a resonance effect of the tramuntana in the hollows of the mountain and over the lagoon, resulting in a strident and terrifying sound.
The truth of the matter is that nobody really knows what it is that makes this sound. But just in case, if you have to go there, take the utmost care not to be paralysed with terror when the roaring of the lagoon sounds.
